Can today’s big three auto execs Wagoner, Mullaly and Nardelli match the persuasion skills of Lee Iacocca? Will GM, Ford and Chrysler survive?
In 1979, against staggering odds, Iacocca personally applied his infectious brand of persuasion and secured a congressional loan of 3.5 billion dollars to keep Chrysler afloat. With the odds stacked high against him, Iacocca persuaded 241 house members to vote Yes, with only 124 nays. In the Senate, he persuaded 43 yes votes against 34 no’s.
Today’s big three presidents are begging for survival – trying to persuade congress for a 25 billion dollar bail out over and above the 25 billion already allocated for upgrading their products. Will they succeed? It all hinges on their persuasion abilities.
What emotional triggers are these heads of industry employing? What triggers are they activating? All three are activating the hope trigger. The hope that they will maintain their viability and keep hundreds of thousands of workers employed. They are using the hope trigger to show congress what it hopes does not happen – the total collapse of America’s manufacturing business. Obama, as president elect chimes in using the authority trigger “The auto industry is the backbone of American manufacturing.”
Ford’s Mullaly brings in the contrast trigger saying “All other countries subsidize their car manufacturers – why shouldn’t America if we want to be competitive?”
